DISABLING CONDITIONS
Substance use disorder has become a sad reality for many, either because they’ve experienced it themselves or because someone they know has. In some cases, individuals can find recovery and manage their substance use through treatment programs and support systems, allowing them to regain control of their lives and return to work. However, for others, particularly those with long-term or severe substance use issues, the road to recovery can be much more complicated. Conditions such as alcohol use disorder, opioid addiction, or stimulant use disorder can have devastating impacts on both physical and mental health. The addiction itself can cause a wide range of symptoms, including intense cravings, mood swings, impaired decision-making, and loss of motivation. The effects of substance use disorder extend beyond just the physical toll, often leading to strained relationships, financial instability, and employment issues. Treatment usually involves a combination of therapy, counseling, and sometimes medication, but recovery can be a long and challenging journey.
For those undergoing treatment, side effects from medications or withdrawal symptoms can add to the difficulties of maintaining a stable routine. Even with consistent care, the unpredictable nature of substance use disorder makes it hard for individuals to maintain a regular work schedule or engage in everyday responsibilities. The ongoing battle with cravings, the mental toll of recovery, and the lingering effects of substance use often make it challenging to function consistently or predictably.
A disabling condition does not need to be disabling every day to support a finding that a person is unable to work because being able to work means doing it daily, week after week, on a regular and continuous basis.
